Why didn't you talk about good cop bad cop? A. It seems that while good cop bad cop may be used, it isn't officially endorsed in an interrogation, and isn't part of official training. The presence of it in hollywood movies is way overblown, because it plays into their "high-adrenaline, highly visual" style. Q. Is this the only interrogation technique there is? A. No, the Reid technique is the main interrogation technique in America but it has recently come under fire for producing false confessions. See this great New Yorker article: [https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/12/09/the-interview-7]. Because of this, much softer interrogation methods have been looked at that don't try to pressure the suspect. The most popular of these techniques is called the PEACE technique. You can read about it here: [http://smordinlaw.com/police-interrogation/] Q. I'm still interested, is there somewhere else I can go to find more information? A. Besides the links I've placed which breadcrumb my research process, there is also a great NPR piece called Good Cop/Bad Cop, I think it's similar to this video, focused on the weird dichotomy between real interrogations and how they actually are carried out. [https://www.npr.org/templates/transcript/transcript.php?storyId=248968150] Q. Does "lie detection" work? A. Not really. This is the reason a lot of people have given up the Reid technique. A huge part of it hinges on the idea that a cop can "tell" when you're lying, which is the justification for applying so much pressure during the accusation portion. In recent years this claim has fallen under a lot of scrutiny. Body language isn't as reliable of a signal of lying as we thought. This is one of many criticisms of the Reid technique. Q. Should I ever talk to the police? A. Only during a traffic stop, where the cops can let you off with a warning if you cooperate and they're feeling generous. In every other circumstance, talking to the cops can ONLY hurt you. Don't talk to the police!!!

Comments

Daniel Vos : Just pull a Mike Ermantraut: "Lawyer" "We don't need that we just want to talk" "Lawyer" "Do you really want to make a big deal out of this?" "Lawyer"

Tim Peters : This is why a lot of innocent people get convicted.

Wuh-huW : Pro Tip: If a cop starts interrogating you, just start interrogating the cop with all the techniques in this video.

Khizar Junaid : Five days later... *Why criminals beat cops in the interrogation room* Whoa I got so many likes awesome!

A one legged man : just remember, 'the enemy with the high ground does not negotiate'. If they are trying to get you to co-operate it's because they don't have a case.

zotharr : COP: Tell me the true ME: I want a lawyer COP: ok, I will call one (later) ME: I can see its you again in a different outfit COP IN A SUIT: He's good

Swamp Life : I would use that first phase to get as much free food as possible

foodhatesme : Just keep in mind that if a cop has evidence proving you did the crime, you won't be sitting in an interrogation room...

Tobias Zauzig : Imagine how exhausting and intimidating this must be to people who are actually not guilty. I could see myself going crazy in a room like that for hours with a guy that tries every psychological trick in the book to get me to confess no matter if I'm guilty or not.

Saitaina Malfoy : "Lawyer", the ONLY thing you say in this situation, repeat as necessary.

Enes : Me: I want my lawyer *Brings in lawyer* Lawyer: I want my lawyer Me: WTF Lol just imagine

Trover19 : “Hello officer! How’s your day?” “GUILTY!”

Nano Rivera : So basically the only people who would be good interrogators are people who are good at being dishonest and manipulative.

Miles Lugo : What's the saying, 50 nos and a yes is a yes.

ktm5050 : So if I am getting interrogated, I'm allowed to sit there, not say a word, and not even acknowledge the cop?

AJ or something : Being honest I would immediately be like "My god this room is boring"

Sofia Lazarev : Next thing you know the government demonetizes the video

Nicholas Bury : This title is click-bait done right.

Nazi Party : Cop: we know you did it..we have evidence Me: no u (Disappears)

Balthazzarr : Cops are trained to "win" the interrogation, not to get at the truth. They are trained to lie and deceive you through various means, whether it be their demeanor or other subtle characteristics of the environment in which you are being interrogated. And yes, it is legal for them to lie to you. They DON'T care if you are innocent. When it gets to the point in an investigation that someone, i.e. you in this case, is being interrogated, they just want to boost their numbers by getting people to confess, regardless of innocence. It's disgusting, but it's the way it is. The most important thing to remember above all else if you are ever interrogated. The cops are NOT your friends. They don't give a shit about you and will throw you in a hole the first chance they get if it means getting that conviction, regardless of your innocence.

quite spicy : Cops: I know you killed this man, we have proof. Me: no u *pulls out reverse card from uno*

Undisputed Guy with a lawnmower : This what i told a police officer once. "If you have all this evidence on me the. Why are you interrogating me?" I plead the 5th afterwards. Easy.

MiYa : *The FBI* wants to know your location

ninjahX : This is not a bullet proof tip, but from personal experience I think it helps A LOT. Like mentioned cops will deploy all most if not all of these methods, but the second the cop walks into the room, close your eyes, deep breathes through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Yeah you got it, basically meditate. The majority of communication is nonverbal about 60% being body language. Closing your eyes effectively takes away 60% of the cop's psychological assault. Nose breathing in deep breathes in combination with closing your eyes will help calm yourself reducing the impact of the other 40% to maybe 20%. The rest is up to you; while you're meditating just keep repeating to yourself in your mind "I'm innocent". And if he says "look at me when I'm talking to you" or the like simply reply "I'd rather not" or the like. It's not like he can force you to look at his ugly mug. Keep in mind this is only if you refuse to remain silent and wish to engage in a psychological game of cat and mouse although you still can totally do this after you've invoked your rights. Good luck and have fun beating them at their own game 👍

Tronald Dump : I came here looking for why my interrogators broke my leg

yebo : Every once in a while, a YouTube recommended video turns out good.

sosos gogogo : If anyone here is still on the ropes. PLEASE go look up "Don't talk to the Police" by Regent University school of law on Youtube. You will not regret it. You may find yourself in this situation one day innocent or not.

Simon Piskorski : We know you killed her! *No, You killed her!!* That's what I do

Justin : Officer: We have evidences pointing toward you! Me: No way! I burned the body and the weapon and buried them ashes at 201 South East Avenue! There’s no way you got evidences!

Naruto 420 : 1.5k dislikes are from the cops

Timothy McLean : The title is kind of ambiguous...

Тимофей Воронов : This video is accurate, but you have to be interrogated at least once to fully understand what it's like.

Tom Muggeridge : If they had hard evidence then why would they need you to confess???

shan_rocks : Maybe in the U.S they beat suspects in interrogation rooms, but not in Canada. The U.S uses the Reid interrogation model in which they are harsh and convict you of the crime (whether you did it or not) and force a confession out of the suspect. After many years of research by Criminal Justice experts on police interrogation techniques, Canada and Britian, in a joint effort started using the PEACE model, which stands for Preparation and Planning, engaging and explaining, account, closure and evaluation. This model is very passive. Whether the suspect did the crime or not, the objective of this model is not to get a confession (the police could care less), the objective, is to disprove or approve of the suspects accounts of what happened based on the evidence from the crime scene(s). Since anyone in the interrogation room is "just a suspect" not convicted of anything, the PEACE model has seen better success. It has lessened false confessions and has aided the police, especially in high profile, complex cases to disern exactly how things happened, at what time, and why? Understanding the mens rea (mental intent) behind actions is far more valuable than getting in suspects faces and accusing them of crimes they may or may not have committed. Although, if their is insurmountable evidence connecting a suspect to the crime, like for example, DNA Evidence, CCTV footage, eye-witness accounts from many by-standers, the weapon tracing back to you, fingerprints, blood splatters etc: the police have the ability to withold evidence from you. Meaning they may ask "On October 15th (day of the crime), where were you at 9p.m". The suspect may lie and say "I was at home watching T.V" and then the interrogator will bring forth evidence showing for example, CCTV footage of you entering a convenience store and a recipt of your purchase at 9:07p.m, as the convenience store is just half a block from the crime scene etc. So Canada and Britian sort of use the best of both worlds, the PEACE and Reid method, which has seen greater success than sticking to just one.

Matyáš Filler : *FBI HAS REPORTED THE CHAT*

Rahul Choudhary : well in good ol' India. The cops literally beat you.

Zedoh : *Why was this in my recommended*

Dwayne Johnson : Honest question: Why do people confess? I mean, even if you did it, why would you ever confess?

Stafer : How to win: 1. Just don't say anything. 2. Think for about 5 minutes before you say something.

Cheezy Peas : You don't just *give* this info to the general public

Megha : im from india and there's no talking here m8 only beating

boiwutyousay watupdawg : Cops: we have evidence, so come out and tell the truth or you will have a harsher sentence. Me: Ha, You just Activated my trap crad Name: Rick astley Ability: Does not let your opponet activate spell cards, trap cards or moster cards for the next five turns Desc:We're no strangers to love You know the rules and so do I A full commitment's what I'm thinking of You wouldn't get this from any other guy I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling Gotta make you understand Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around and desert you Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you We've known each other for so long Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it Inside we both know what's been going on We know the game and we're gonna play it And if you ask me how I'm feeling Don't tell me you're too blind to see Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around and desert you Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around and desert you Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you Never gonna give, never gonna give (Give you up) (Ooh) Never gonna give, never gonna give (Give you up) We've known each other for so long Your heart's been aching but you're too shy to say it Inside we both know what's been going on We know the game and we're gonna play it I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling Gotta make you understand Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around and desert you Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around and desert you Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you Never gonna give you up Never gonna let you down Never gonna run around and desert you Never gonna make you cry

Esthar Rhyth : Tom Segura had a really funny joke about this. The only guy who didn't get caught on the show The First 48 asked for a lawyer before he answered anything.

garmon bozia : I've spent my whole life in surrender position

Seth Tan : I ATE THE PLATE, THE WHOLE PLATE

Dr. Tiggy : Thanks. This should come in handy if I'm ever caught for all those murders.

David Stinnett : Always get a lawyer. Even if you are worried about “looking guilty”. Always. Get. A. Lawyer. Even if you think you can “clear this up” on your own. If you are ever in a room with a cop that you are not aloud to leave then you need a lawyer. You are not an expert in the law, neither is the cop. The cop has a job to do. A lawyer’s job is to know the law. It is never a bad idea to get an expert on any topic, and this is doubly true when your freedom is on the line.

Maximilianmus : *Text from Fbi* : yo delete this

Scorpio Snake : Whenever the cops starts asking questions just start shouting , " Jesus is my Lord " ." Jesus bled for you " . "Jesus won't forgive you " .
