Vocalizations of male and female mice

House mice (Mus musculus) vocalize during social encounters. When courting a female, male mice produce high frequency sounds above the range of human hearing, known as ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). When receiving intense bouts of male attention, female mice emit low frequency, broadband calls, commonly recognized as the mouse squeak. This video features a time-expanded recording of a male and female mouse during courtship. When slowed down, we can appreciate the variation in both of these calls that could be behaviorally significant to these animals.
